LEAD! for Conductors

Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Johannes Gustavsson present a special course conductors based on the principals and techniques of Jukka-Pekka Saraste’s LEAD! program.

Integrated into the dynamic environment of the LEAD! project is the course for conductors, a chance to not only work with and learn from the expertise of Maestro Saraste, but also to receive feedback from the invaluable experience of highly successful, international musicians and to be coached through the process of both learning to interact with and become part of the complex organism that is a symphony orchestra.

Through both observing the rehearsals and workshops of LEAD! and actively conducting the orchestral repertoire, conductors will have unparalleled access to the orchestral environment and the chance to intensively acquire experience and knowledge in a unique and vibrant working environment.

The LEAD! concept also involves high levels of interaction where leading artists will also host discussions and workshops covering other essential music industry topics while offering a support network with unique access to all facets of musical life.

“Every conductor and soloist knows how essential a good mentor is, and it’s no different for orchestra members and leaders” – Jukka-Pekka Saraste

The professional core of this LEAD! project is made up of the international professors who will be on site teaching and coaching all the young musicians involved as well as the Aurora Chamber Orchestra, the internationally praised string orchestra made up of musicians from all over the world who meet under the Aurora umbrella to present dazzling concert experiences and whose goal is to pass on their knowledge and experience to young musicians and to help them along the path to acquiring and developing these very specific skills and experiences.

LEAD! was designed by maestro Saraste to be a training ground both for young instrumentalists and conductors and will therefore be integrated both into the long-standing tradition of Aurora’s Symphony Orchestra program as well as the Aurora Music Conducting Masterclasses.

At the heart of Aurora Music’s Trollhättan/Vänersborg Masterclasses and Festival is the Aurora Symphony Orchestra. Carrying on in the tradition of working together with leading conductors and soloists, this year Aurora not only builds on its relationship with Jukka-Pekka Saraste and his LEAD! mentorship program but welcomes outstanding soloist Elisabeth Leonskaja and our longstanding partner Johannes Gustavsson.

The Aurora Symphony Orchestra provides a platform and opportunity for most of the students at our masterclass to learn from and perform with leading conductors and soloists. The orchestra will perform Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Mendlessohn’s Symphony No. 3 and Beethoven’s Emperor concerto with Elisabeth Leonskaja as soloist.

LEAD! with Jukka-Pekka Saraste

Launched in 2018 in Stockholm, Aurora Music is proud to continue its collaboration with legendary conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste and his orchestral mentorship program “LEAD!”. The program has been specially designed with orchestral leaders from around the globe to help coach young musicians to develop the unique and necessary skills and understanding to become top orchestral players and leaders on their instruments.

LEAD! educates through the rehearsal and performance process focusing on helping musicians learn to communicate both as leaders and as section players, to understand and feel comfortable in a variety of styles and repertoire, to communicate with conductors and to ensure quality playing under any circumstances. Maestro Saraste aims to give students the tools to develop their individual character and personality and the confidence and knowledge to use them in the orchestral environment and beyond.

“Every conductor and soloist knows how essential a good mentor is, and it’s no different for orchestra members and leaders” – Jukka-Pekka Saraste

LEAD! was designed by maestro Saraste and his team to be a training ground both for young instrumentalists and conductors and is therefore integrated both into the long-standing tradition of Aurora’s Symphony Orchestra program as well as the Aurora Music Conducting Masterclasses.

Masterclasses, Workshops, Chamber Music, Orchestra, and more!

Aurora Music is proud to launch a new festival in the heart of Aurora country, where Aurora launched it’s festivals and masterclasses back in 2006!

A new, elite course specialising in orchestra playing, ensemble work and chamber music will make its debut this August in the twin cities of Trollhättan and Vänersborg, just 12 kilometres apart in beautiful western Sweden.

String players will be boosted by the Aurora Chamber Orchestra and learn from playing next to and listening to our own outstanding string orchestra. They will also have individual classes, chamber music coaching, and perform in concerts!

Wind players will benefit from the expert advise and coaching of Gaby Pas-Van Riet. A special course where only a few wind players will be admitted and receive intensive coaching on ensemble playing, chamber music and orchestral work.

Likewise, brass players will benefit from the experience and expertise of Tom Poulson from the legendary Stockholm Chamber Brass. Special sessions in chamber music, brass technique, warm-ups, audition training and career advise will all be paired with sectionals.

Percussionists will have the opportunity to play chamber music and study orchestral playing under the guidance of maestro Johannes Gustavsson.

The wonderful Russian pianist Vladimir Ovchinnikov joins us this year for the first time! A small number of pianists will have solo classes and chamber music coaching as well as play in concert with the specially selected students for this masterclass.

Very few places are available for this brand new festival and the wonderful experience is available to all European Citizens who have completed at least one year of university level studies for free, and on top of that will be worth 7.5 ECTS credits!
